Reflecting on the 15 year anniversary of 9-11:
9/11: God’s Call to Repent
There are many questions to be asked about the tragedy of 9-11. How could this happen to a “Christian Nation”? Where was God on that day? Why didn’t God protect America? Who caused these attacks? Couldn’t God have stopped this from happening? What is the meaning of this tragedy?
Most of us remember the shocking images on 9-11-2001 as the World Trade Center buildings were destroyed by several evil men in airplanes. On that day 15 years ago, I began to pray to God and ask Him why did this tragedy happen. The Lord revealed to me the meaning of these events from His perspective. On that day the Lord removed his hand of protection that has been over America as a warning for us to humble ourselves, return to Him and repent. For many years America has drifted away from the Lord. We no longer walk in His ways and honor him as Lord. God was showing us that He is the one that protects us from evil. We are completely dependent on Him. Do we trust in our political and military power or is our faith in the Lord? The Word warns that in this world we are surrounded by evil because the whole world lies in the power of the evil one. (1 John 5:19). The Bible teaches that Satan’s intention is to rob, kill and destroy but that God’s plan is to give us Life and Mercy. (John 10:10). Evil wants to destroy all of us but God has held back the darkness in His Mercy and Love. He is not wishing that any would perish but that all would come to repentance. (2 Peter 3: 9). It is by the Grace of God that this country still exists. Do we fear God and give Him the honor and respect that He deserves? Are we thankful for His many blessings? The Lord could remove His protection from America and evil would destroy us. 9-11 was a warning and a call to repent.
In the Old Testament, God protected Israel as long as they followed Him but removed their protection when they fell away. The Lord’s blessing was upon Israel when they followed his ways, but when Israel fell away from their God He gave them into the hands of their enemies. He repeatedly sent prophets to warn His people but they refused to listen. In the same way, God is warning America to return to Him before He removes his hand of protection and allows our enemies of overtake us. God has sent His prophets to warn America but are we listening? God’s protection was lifted for a couple hours on that day in September to show America that we are completely dependent on Him for our very lives. He has graciously protected American but we have fallen away from Him. God permitted our enemies to triumph over us as a warning for us to return to Him. Our laws, philosophies and lifestyles have become increasingly ungodly. God’s protection will increasingly be removed from America until we turn to Him with all our hearts. In our pride we claimed that it was our might and power that made this country great. God has shown us that without His protection a small group of evil men can bring horrible destruction to this country. The Lord will continue to humble America until we come to Him on our knees.
God is speaking this Word to America: “If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”(2 Chronicles 7:14.) The Lord promises to forgive, heal and restore America when we turn to Him.
On that fateful day 15 years ago I began to pray to the Lord and He revealed to me His three warnings for America:
Warning #1: Those who refuse to hear God’s call to repentance will perish.
In the Gospel of Luke, Jesus explains the meaning of several tragedies that had occurred in Israel during His time and warns His listeners that if they refuse to repent, there will come a far greater loss of life. This occurred several decades later when Jerusalem was completely destroyed by the Romans.
“There were some present at that very time who told him of the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. And he answered them, ‘Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans, because they suffered thus? I tell you, No; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish. Or those eighteen upon whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them, do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others who dwelt in Jerusalem: I tell you, No; by unless you repent you will all likewise perish.'” (Luke 13:1-5).
The Word of God is clear that those who die in tragedies like what happened on 9-11 are not worse sinners than those who survived. It also states that these deaths were a warning to those who survived that they must repent. Death entered into this world through Adam and Eve’s sin. Only through Christ can the power of death be overcome. Tragedies like 9-11 should humble us and drive us to our knees. The death rate in this world in 100%. Have we walked in the ways of God as expressed in His Word. If we love Him we will keep His commandments. (John 14:15). Do we love God and keep his commandments? Do we know what his commandments are? Have we fallen away from God’s Truth? Do we call evil good and good evil? America, it is time to return to Your God before evil overtakes our nation.
9-11 was not a call to attack evil across the world but to deal with the sin that is in our own hearts. It is always easier to see the faults of others than it is to look in the mirror and see our own sins. The Word teaches us to deal first with our own sin before we try to remove it from others. “You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the speck that is in your brother’s eye.” (Luke 6:42). America, it’s time to get on our knees and repent for our own sins before we try to deal with the sins of the rest of the world.
Warning #2 The destruction of this world by fire.
One of the strongest images of 9-11 is of the fire that destroyed the World Trade Center. The Lord was warning us of the coming destruction of the universe by fire at the Final Judgment. His Word teaches that all the elements in the heaven and earth will melt with fire.
“First of all you must understand this, that scoffers will come in the last days with scoffing, following their own passions and saying, ‘Where is the promise of his coming? For ever since the father fell asleep, all things have continued as they were from the beginning of creation.’ They deliberately ignore this fact, that by the word of God heaven existed long ago, and an earth formed out of water and by means of water, through which the world that then existed was deluged with water and perished. By that same word the heaven and earth that now exist have been stored up for fire, being kept until the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.
But do not ignore this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slow about his promise as some count slowness, but is forbearing toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and the heavens will pass away with a loud noise, and the elements, will be dissolved with fire, and the earth and the works that are upon it will be burned up.” (2 Peter 3:3-12).
God is warning us that the earth and the works on it will be burned up with fire. The Lord has allowed this world to continue because He wants all men and women to turn to him to be saved and receive the gift of eternal life. The choice is clear: if we die with Christ then we spend Eternity with Him, but if we reject Christ then we perish forever. The Lord created the universe with the power of His Word. He spoke and the universe was created. Einstein recorded the amount of power that God stored in the matter of this universe in the equation: E=MC squared. In other words, there is enough power stored in a few atoms to destroy a city the size of Hiroshima. God warns that in the end He will speak His Word and all of the matter of this universe will pass away with a loud noise and the elements will be dissolved with fire. This is not the end but the beginning of a new age where Christ will reign with His Church in a new heaven and earth where righteousness dwells. (verse 3:13).
Paul writes that this knowledge of the impending destruction of the earth should lead us to live different lives. “Since these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of persons ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God because of which the heavens will be kindled and dissolved, and the elements will melt with fire.” (verses 3:11,12). Would we change how we live if we knew that the world would end today? I would get on my knees and cry out to God for Mercy and Forgiveness and repent for my sins. Next, I would run and tell my loved ones to come to God to receive Mercy before the end comes. I would boldly to tell others about the way to salvation through Christ. Every second of my life would now be precious. Our priorities would completely change if we knew that the world was ending. Our earthly goals would seem so trivial in the light of the end of the world. What amazing light would shine out of God’s people to this world of darkness. We would leave behind our spiritual apathy and boldly proclaim the Light of the Gospel.
Warning #3: Birth pangs of the end or this world, the Coming of Christ and the Hope of a New Age where He reigns:
The destruction of the Twin Towers on 9-11 was one of the signs of the beginning of the end of this world. It was the birth pangs of a new age when Christ rules on this earth. Unfortunately, many missed the message of God and directed their attention on revenge instead of repentance. The Word is clear that the world in these last days will not see the signs of the end. ” For you yourselves know well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. When people say, ‘There is peace and security’, then sudden destruction will come upon them as travail comes upon a woman with child, and there will be no escape. But you are not in darkness, brethren, for that day to surprise you like a thief.” (1 Thessalonians 5:2-4). Jesus is coming like a thief in the night to rescue the Church(the jewels) and take them to be with Him Forever. The Bible makes is clear that those who live on the earth in the last days will not see the end coming. Those who die in tragedies like 9-11 seldom know beforehand that their lives were ending on that day. The Word states that these last days will be life the days of Lot: “they ate, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they built, but on the day when Lot when our from Sodom fire and brimstone rained from heaven and destroyed them all- so it will be on the day when the Son of man is revealed.” (Luke 17:28-30).
The earth can no longer contain the sin that has been committed on it. The Lord told Cain after he had murdered his brother, “The voice of your brother’s blood is crying to me from the ground. And now you are cursed from the ground…” (Genesis 4:10,11.). The earth is cursed from the sin and evil that has been committed on it for over 6000 years. We will increasingly see the effects of sin as earthquakes and natural disasters which will overtake this world. Again it is time for us to repent and seek God’s Mercy before the time of the end when there will be no escape.
On September 11th 2001, the Lord spoke to me that this event was one of the birth pangs of the end. As with a woman in childbirth, the birth pangs will gradually increase in strength and frequency. The Lord is “birthing” a new age when Christ reigns with his Church in a new heaven and earth. Jesus is coming in the clouds with power and great glory and He will set up a kingdom that will never end. “Then will appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory; He will sent out his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.” Matthew 24:30,31). Jesus will then rule on this earth with His Saints. “But the saints of the Most High shall receive the kingdom, and possess the kingdom for ever, for ever and ever.” (Daniel 7:18). “And the kingdom and the dominion and the greatness of the kingdoms under the whole heaven shall be given to the people of the saints of the Most High.” (Daniel 7:27).
We are living in the last days of the kingdom of darkness and awaiting the coming of God’s kingdom where Christ will rule with His Church on a new heaven and earth. Are we ready to meet Christ when he returns? The world that we know will soon pass away and the Lord will soon set a new glorious kingdom where Christ will rule forever. Hallelujah!. If our faith is in Christ then we will lift up our eyes to the heavens in faith. If our faith is in this world then it will be a day of terror.
Those who refuse to ask for Mercy from the Lamb will soon know the Wrath of the Lion who comes to Judge the world. “Behold, He is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see Him, every one who pierced Him; and all the tribes of the earth will wail on account of Him. Even so. Amen. ” Revelation 1:7 The world crucified the Lamb when He came 2000 years ago, but they will soon meet the Lion! He will return as the Great and Glorious King and they will experience His Eternal Wrath. “He opened the sixth seal, I looked, and behold, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth, the full moon became like blood and the stars of the sky fell to the earth as the fig tree sheds its winter fruit when shaken by a gale; the sky vanished like a scroll that is rolled up, and every mountain and island was removed from its place. Then the kings of the earth and the great men and the generals and the rich and the strong, and every one, slave and free, hid in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains, calling to the mountains and rocks, ‘Fall on us and hide us from the face of Him who is seated on the Throne, and from the Wrath of the Lamb; for the great day of their Wrath has came, and who can stand before it:'” Revelation 6:12-17. Unbelievers have constructed a godless society to shield them from the reality of God and the Lamb. Soon, it will all disappear and everyone will have to bow before Jesus and acknowledge that He is Lord. Jesus will then sit upon His Great White Throne and Judge all those whose names are not written in His Book of Life. Revelation 2:.11-15. Come to Him now, before it is too late and receive His Mercy and the gift of eternal life. (the last paragraph was excerpt from In Pursuit of God).
